Most people think if they leave there air conditioning on long enough it will cool down to any temperature like a freezer. That is no true. The average air conditioning system is designed to cool the structure 20 t0 25 degrees from the out side temperature. So if it is 100 degrees you will be lucky to get the inside temperature to 80 to 75 degrees. This also depends on the house envelope and the house insulation value. So if your house is old and has little insulation the hot weather is going to effect you most. See later for more information on this subject or respond via comment and I would be happy to answer any question you might have.
Shelton’s Pride takes great care and time designing and installing all different types of duct systems. We train all of are technicians and installers through several different outside agency to allow the best mentoring possible.
Most homes are equipped with new construction or builders grade duct systems, which most of the time are incorrect and are costing you extra money and less comfort in your home. Shelton’s Pride can usually use most of the ducting that is provided from the builder. We usually just need to make some modifications to make sure there is enough return air and that we can get enough air pressure throughout the duct system. We can achieve this by adding balancing dampers and correcting the return air ducts or increasing the return air grills on vertical units. We take out remote plenums or triangle boxes in the structure to insure correct air flow. These are used to save money for the builders. The builders do not want to run straight ducts runs with dampers, because it is more expensive for the ducts.
All duct system should be designed according to the ACCA Manuel D. In basic terms all of the ducts are designed according to pressure drops. Every duct has its own psi drop depending on friction loss, length, turns, grills, etc. After designing your duct system you need to match it up with the proper blower fan with the correct static pressure ability to overcome the pressure drop in the duct system.
Most builders due provide Manuel D calculations, but do not test the systems after installing them. This is crucial because no duct system is installed in a lab atmosphere, it installed in a home with framers that don’t even take in account the duct system.
To sum it all up, you should have an air diagnostic test on your home or structure to insure you are getting the correct airflow that was promised by the builder. This should be performed by air balance certified technician with the correct tools. See blogs about who is qualified to perform there test.
Air Conditioning repair problems are very common. The less a home owner has there a/c system checked and maintained, the more problems they will have. This speaks true if your system was installed incorrectly by a unqualifiedair conditioning contractor. The proper contractor should be equipped with tools to the job right. You would not believe on how many air conditioning contractors do not have the correct tools. They just sale you a magic box and install it and do not test it. The air conditioning contractor should be equipped with air balance tools (flow hoods, magnehelic gauge, hygrometer, velocity measuring tool, etc), they also should be performing some type of heat load calculation on your home. Other tools and procedures they should have and do are: micron gauge to evacuate the system properly, gauges to read pressures, clamp on temperature probes, air temperature probes, amp meter, rpm meter, etc.
When you decide to use a contractor it is good to ask them if they have these tools before letting them touch your air conditioning system. When installing your air conditioning system you need to make sure the air conditioning contractor test your system before and after the job so they can prove the system is operating correctly and efficiently. Air balance test and super heat subcool test are the main ones. This is just a little information to arm you with when choosing the right contractor. Go to www.sheltonspride.com to see more use full information.
Most likely you have not had an air conditioning duct system test by the right a/c contractor. This is very important, because the duct system is just as important as the air conditioning system. The two work together as a team if one is not designed or operating correctly. It can cause high energy bills, premature failure of your equipment, high humidity in home, dust or mold problems, and improper cooling capacities. For example: If your duct system is designed incorrectly, it can cause a 5 ton system to only operate at a 3 ton system due to the lack of delivery of the air, or if you have a 15 SEER system, it can cause your 15 SEER system to only operate at 10 SEER causing your energy bill to be sky high.
What is a proper duct system test?
The technician testing the duct system should be certified in air balance testing and static pressure testing preferably through National Comfort Institute. The technician should be equipped with a T.S.I. Flow hood, Static pressure gauge, and an anemometer. The tools will insure you that the technician is performing the test correctly. After test is complete you should receive a report stating the the measurements and recommendations to correct any problems. The average system installation is only performing at 60 % of its rated capacity. Study by N.C.I.
